Work life balance is becoming increasingly harder and harder to achieve. Technological improvements and the smart phones in our pockets make it to where we can always be reached. But while we are always connected. It is up to us to ensure that we find the balance we need. Below we will discuss 4 strategies to help improve your work-life balance.
1 Set boundaries and communicate those boundaries.
This might be one of the most important steps. Being sure to set boundaries for yourself and stick to them, will help you in finding your balance. While work can be stressful and it is easy to just take a quick peek at our email at 10pm. It doesn't mean we should. Even simply thinking about work on off hours is taking away from the present. Therefore, when you set your boundaries be specific. Communicate those boundaries to co-workers, family, friends. Then stick to them, boundaries cannot be conditional. Once you start to slip it's a long ways back to the top.
2 Be present.
Work often times can follow us home, intentional or not. Maybe it's the big pitch meeting you feel like you flopped on, or you have a huge presentation coming up. No matter the cause it is important to take steps to relax, unwind and be present. Being present is more than physical presence. It's mental and emotional to. Being present means you are fully aware and conscious in your environment. No distractions from the thoughts on your mind. A few ways to get started on being present is to first, choose to be present. Observe your thoughts and activities and appreciate them. Slow down, take time to find the joy in the things you are doing. Check in with yourself, ask yourself where you are and take time to consider how you are feeling. Last but not least, breath. Breathing exercises are tremendously helpful to being present and self-care in general.
3 Learn to say "no"
We have talked about being present and setting boundaries. Saying no is an integral part of setting and maintaining your boundaries. I know this is a difficult concept for many of us, myself included. I am most definitely one of the many people who often give in to FOMO (fear of missing out). However, sometimes, we have to miss out. Missing out can allow us to recharge, stay focused on our goals and ensure that we are not spreading ourselves too thin.
4 Develop a routine
Last but not least, develop a routine. Humans are creatures of habit. Therefore, the creation of a routine can be extremely beneficial. Additionally, a daily routine can help with steps 1-3. Routines can have built in self-care. Allowing you to destress, be more present and mindful. As well as help you to be more true to the boundaries you set.
