Secrets to success as an Athletic Trainer

I am sure that these tips will vary slightly depending on who you are talking to and their personal experiences. As for my background I have currently spent 6 years working in collegiate setting and 2 years working within the industrial setting. Throughout those 8 years of professional experience I have learned a lot from various mentors and worked with numerous athletic trainers. Here are my tips to being a successful athletic trainer.

1. Confidence:

This is by far one of the most important factors. Confidence is essential in all professions but especially healthcare. Having confidence in your abilities will help to ensure optimal results and recovery for your athletes, employees or patients.

2. Continuous Education:

Healthcare is constantly evolving. With that athletic trainers need to keep their skills in tip top shape to ensure we provide the best possible care. Staying up to date on position statements and best practices not only protects you but it also helps to protect those you provide care to.

3. Communication/Interpersonal Skills:

As Athletic Trainers we serve as the organizational center for most of our patients. Communicating with the patient or athlete themself as well as other health care professionals, coaches, supervisors (etc.) is imperative to aid in optimal recovery.

4. Decision Making:

In all settings of athletic training, emergencies can arise, and when they do it is most often the athletic trainer who is the first on the scene. Decision making is critical in order to help ensure the best possible care and outcomes. For example during a game or competition you may have to make a sound decision regarding an athletes ability to return to play. Or in an occupational setting, you will need to make a sound decision regarding the employees ability to continue work or if they need more advanced care.

5. Detailed Oriented:

Last but not least being detail oriented. As our profession continues to grow this is even more imperative. Ensuring that we are not just going through the motions of our evaluation. Rather taking time to truly listen and understand. You never want to miss any early signs and symptoms of potentially serious injury or illness. For example working within the industrial setting I work with employees of various ages and backgrounds. Taking time to understand comorbidities and brushing up on chronic issues is imperative in providing best in class care.
